Freiburg is, in contrast to many other university cities, a real student city. Every sixth resident here is a matriculated student, many of the university buildings are located directly in the Old City, the university is the largest employer far and wide, and the many students bring a lot of life into the city. According to one study, every other resident of Germany would most prefer to live in Freiburg: the location in the Tri-National Triangle between the Black Forest and Alsatia seems to have its draw for beginning academics as well. Over 30,000 students are matriculated at Freiburg Institutes of Higher Education. Most of them, about 23,000 to be exact, study at the largest and oldest institution in Freiburg, the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, which was founded in 1453.
