
Bernhard was already active in orchestras and bands as a trumpet player, director, singer, bassist and guitarist during his school days. Later, he played bass and guitar in the YAMAHA big band, led by Peter Herbolzheimer, and in the Air Force Music Corp Band 4 in Hamburg. He has arranged and/or composed more than 900 works for soloist, band, orchestra and choir in his freelance work over the last 17 years. Bernhard has also been active in diverse productions for stage, radio, TV and phonograph records with et al., the Walter Schiedel Orchestra, the Günther Hochreiner Band and the Peter Weisheit Band.
As a workshop instructor, he taught at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, The American School of Modern Music (Paris), and The Pop & Jazz Conservatory Helsinki. He has worked with EWOTON music publishers since 1998. His book, “Arrangement & Orchestration,” was published in March, 2002 by ALFRED Publishing Gmbh.
Bernhard originally came to the Jazz & Rock Schule Freiburg in 1989 to study guitar. Soon after, however, he became director of the big band, and became Artistic Director of the school in 1995. In his activity at the J&RSF, he combines his organizational talent with his extraordinary musical and teaching ability.

Pre-Auditions 2011! For the first time it will be possible for applicants who live far away to apply for the IMCF through a pre-screening video audition. The results can be used to determine whether it is a good idea to travel a far distance for the live audition or where there might be room for improvement as preparation for the audition. Read more
