Berklee Scholarships

At the International Music College Freiburg, yearly auditions take place for those who would like to apply for a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music.

Here is some useful information about the application procedure and the audition:

Application Procedure

Application:
The interested person applies directly to the Berklee College of Music. To do this, it is necessary first to register on the college’s web site.

After the written application:
Circa 6 weeks before the audition, Berklee College of Music will notify the applicant via
e-mail when and where the audition will take place.

Berklee auditions at the International Music College Freiburg:
Are held once each year: the dates for 2010 will be announced.

Please come 30 minutes before the warming-up time, in order to prepare for the audition and the interview.

The audition
Before the audition that takes place at the International Music College Freiburg, the applicant has 15 minutes to warm up and to look over the written music.

The audition lasts 15 minutes, and consists of the following:

  • a prepared piece chosen by the applicant
  • sight-reading
  • a simple blues
  • optional: improvisation on a standard jazz song or set of chord changes
  • melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and ear-training exercises

The personal application interview:
Each applicant explains his/her goals and expectations connected to the program of study in a 15-minute talk with the examiner. Those who would like to can also bring and present excerpts of his/her creative work. This material will, of course, be returned to the applicant after the interview.

Equipment in the audition rooms:
The audition rooms at the International Music College Freiburg are equipped with pianos, drum sets, guitar and bass amplifiers, microphones, PAs, CD players and music stands.

Check list:
The following check list will help you to think about what must be brought to the audition.

  • All acoustic and e-bass, horn, guitar, drum and string players must bring their own instruments to the audition.
  • Bassists, guitar and string players must bring their own tuning devices, instrument cables and effect equipment.
  • Amplifiers for guitar and bass will be supplied by the school.
  • Singers can bring their own microphones and cables, but it is not obligatory.
  • Drummers must bring their own sticks, and a practice pad for use the preparation room, since most of these rooms have no drum sets. A standard 4- or 5-part drum set with 2 cymbals will be supplied in the examination room. Double bass drum pedals will not be supplied.
